What can gum recession, also known as periodontitis, hide ?
Gum recession, also known as gum disease or periodontitis, is a condition that affects the tissues supporting the teeth, such as the gums and bone. It can seriously harm dental health and be linked to serious health issues such as:
- Heart disease
Research has shown a connection between periodontitis and heart diseases like coronary artery disease, strokes, and hardening of the arteries. Prolonged inflammation associated with periodontitis is believed to cause widespread inflammation, increasing the risk of heart diseases. People with periodontitis are also at higher risk of infective endocarditis, a heart infection.
Individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontitis, and the presence of periodontitis can worsen blood sugar levels. Chronic infection and inflammation associated with periodontitis can make blood sugar management more challenging.
- Respiratory disease
Periodontitis can increase the risk of certain respiratory diseases, including pneumonia. This can occur when bacteria in the mouth reach the lungs, causing an infection.
- Rheumatoid arthritis
There is evidence suggesting an association between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis. The inflammation observed in both cases may be linked.
- Breast cancer
Gum diseases could be responsible for an increase in breast cancer incidence.
It is important to note that these associations do not necessarily mean that periodontitis is the direct cause of these diseases, but rather that there are links between them.
What are the recommendations to follow ?
It is crucial to maintain good oral health and consult a dental health professional to prevent, diagnose, and treat periodontitis. Our dentists are available to discuss your medical history for better management. Don’t hesitate to discuss this with your primary care physician as well.
