Scaling and Dental hygiene

To ensure your smile is a really healthy one, benefit from regular dental scaling and advice to improve your dental health.

Why regular scaling is so important?

Regular dental scaling is essential for maintaining good oral health. Dental plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, can cause cavities and gum disease if not removed through regular brushing and flossing. Over time, plaque mineralizes and forms tartar, which cannot be removed by simple brushing and can lead to serious problems. Dental scaling removes plaque and accumulated tartar, thus protecting your teeth and gums while contributing to fresh breath and a lasting feeling of cleanliness.

How does a dental scaling appointment at Ardentis work?

At Ardentis, scaling is performed by our experienced dental hygienists who use the most advanced techniques to ensure effective and comfortable care. We specifically use the Guided Biofilm Therapy® (GBT) technique by EMS Dental, which follows an eight-step approach. This innovative method efficiently removes dental plaque and prevents oral diseases while ensuring optimal comfort.

  1. Initial Examination and Assessment: An initial evaluation is conducted to detect the presence of dental biofilm and assess the overall condition of your teeth and gums.
  2. Staining: A special dye is applied to reveal the invisible dental biofilm, allowing for targeted and complete removal.
  3. Motivation: The hygienist shows you the areas where biofilm is present and explains brushing and hygiene techniques (flossing and interdental brushes) to effectively remove it at home.
  4. Airflow®: An Airflow® device is used to remove the biofilm and superficial stains with a mixture of water, air, and fine powder, ensuring deep cleaning without damaging dental surfaces.
  5. Perioflow®: For patients with gum issues, the Perioflow® device is used to thoroughly clean periodontal pockets, reducing inflammation and the risk of infections.
  6. Piezon®: The Piezon® ultrasound is then used to precisely and gently remove any remaining subgingival tartar (under the gum line).
  7. Control: A new staining is applied to ensure that all biofilm and tartar have been removed.
  8. Follow-up Appointment: A personalized follow-up plan is established to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent the formation of new tartar.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. How long does a scaling session take?

A. The total duration of the appointment with the hygienist varies from 45 to 60 minutes depending on your oral health situation.

Q. Does the hygienist take X-rays during a dental scaling appointment?

A. During the scaling, the hygienist may take control X-rays if indicated by a dentist. These will be done only with your consent. If necessary, the hygienist will refer you to a dentist for a complete dental check-up.

Q. What is the cost of a dental scaling?

A. The cost of a dental scaling (excluding X-rays) varies depending on the complexity of your oral health condition and the level of hygiene maintenance you ensure daily. In any case, the scaling costs a maximum of CHF 198.-.

Q. When should I schedule a dental check-up instead of a scaling?

A. A dental check-up with a dentist and scaling are complementary. If you are not in pain and seek preventive care, schedule a scaling appointment. The hygienist will then refer you to a dentist for a dental check-up.

If you have not had a dental check-up for over a year and/or you feel pain, schedule a dental check-up appointment directly 😉

Q. How often should I visit for a dental check-up and scaling?

A. The interval between these appointments depends on your dental situation and can be every 3 to 12 months for the dental hygienist and every 6 to 12 months for the dentist.
